Melody is the Senior Associate Provost, Dean for Graduate Studies and a Professor in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services. Her academic expertise is in the development and treatment of emotional and behavioral disorders of children and youth. Her research focus is on identifying and implementing evidence-based practices in schools and homes to prevent and respond to children’s behavioral disorders. Melody has secured around $2 million of funding and published over 100 books, chapters, and articles on her areas of focus. Her work has been recognized internationally—most recently she was awarded the James M. Kauffman Publication Award for a scholarly work that results in knowledge leading to exemplary practice.

Melody earned her doctoral degree from the University of Virginia and was appointed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Kansas’s applied research center, Juniper Gardens Children’s Project. Since then, she has been a faculty member and served as program coordinator for approximately 12 of those years and as the interim department chair for one year. Melody has served on the Executive Board of the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division for Research, and is co-editor of the top-tier journal, Behavioral Disorders. She currently serves on the editorial boards of Remedial and Special Education, Behavioral Disorders, Learning Disabilities: An International Journal, and the Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders
